A career in medical coding and billing consists of two areas of learning required to process medical claims in the healthcare industry. One area of study is the coding of the diagnosis or assessment as determined by the doctor into a code acceptable to insurance companies using a format called Current Procedural Terminology. The other area of training is the actual processing of the claim from the medical office to the insurance company using medical billing software.
Both areas of this career field require accuracy, training and experience to reduce the amount of errors when submitting insurance claims to the company. In addition to training, many medical offices seek certified medical coding and billing specialists. The reason medical offices and hospitals seek this additional training and certification is due to the high amount of claims rejected due to input error and the complex nature of insurance claims and billing process.
While medical coding and billing may appear complex in nature to a beginner, established coding & billing specialists learn the process quickly with some eventually owning their own business. One popular aspect of owning a coding and billing business is that they can easily take their business with them if they relocate. With the advent of internet technology, specialists are able to start up their business once they have relocated and settled into their residence.
In addition to owning a business, employment opportunities for trained specialist exist in hospitals, doctor’s offices, professional service companies and other healthcare facilities that process bills and interact with insurance companies. With the proper training, a career in medical coding & billing can lead to job opportunities in many cities in the United States.
