Future Business Leaders of Hampton Roads – Business Degree Program Graduates from Centura College Newport News

The graduating students in the Business Degree Program at Centura College, Newport News campus write a professional business plan as their capstone course. It represents 18 months of business instruction and finalizes their academic training. Business plans have a 6-part development process and 5 sections which include a written statement that describes the nature of the business, the target market, the advantages the business will have in relation to competition, and the resources and qualifications of the owners.

Business plans are vital for starting and running a business and for applying for business loans.  The business degree program students write a plan for an actual business that they hope to start soon after graduation. They take their idea for a business and write it into a plan that supports their vision. These business degree students have a definite goal and this business plan is the first step towards its attainment.

This business plan is a challenging and overwhelming undertaking for the students. However, since the instructor expectation is the most important factor for student achievement, these students will meet the challenge.  The business plan class is taught by Mr. Larry Van Horn of Business Plans & Consulting, LLC, a company he owns and operates where he writes business plans for entrepreneurs who are starting their own businesses. This firsthand knowledge is brought directly to the classroom for his students to benefit. The expertise, professionalism and hands-on experience he brings to the classroom makes him a model instructor for both student and colleagues.

Mr. Van Horn pushes them beyond their perceived capabilities and guides and encourages them through each step. Mr. Van Horn personally tutors one of his students, as onlookers are brought to tears by four encouraging words spoken to him as he ponders the daunting task in front of him, “You can do it.”
