Centura College – Norfolk Dental Assisting Student Recognized with Achievement Award

It takes dedication and a strong passion for dentistry, to overcome the obstacles that one Norfolk Dental Assisting student has.  A native of Japan, Urara Pierrelouis came to the United States six months before she enrolled into the Dental Assistant Program at Centura College in Norfolk, VA.  Her goal was simple, to be able to provide for her three children.

Urara attended every class and always stayed behind to practice skills labs.  Undoubtedly attentive, she took lots of notes.  This Norfolk dental assisting student not only studied her assignments, but actually translated all of the information from English to Japanese.  Her textbook was littered with ‘Post-it-Notes’ that had all the translations.  She excelled at her externship site and went on to graduate maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

She enjoyed the experience that the externship provided and was eager for more.  She was encouraged by her instructors to enroll into the Expanded Dental Functions Program.  After thoroughly reviewing the many opportunities of an Expanded Functions Assistant she enrolled in the evening program.

As a military wife, Urara has the potential to go to any state and become gainfully employed.  She continues to excel at every level while acting as a mentor to other students.  Urara has set an example of how determination and hard work can be intertwined into a rewarding career.

At Centura College, the Executive Education Committee (EEC) reviews nominations from 22 campus locations across the country each year for the “Student of the Year Award”.  The EEC presented the Student of the Year Award at the 3rd Annual Educational Professional Development Conference to Urara Pierrelouis, for her dedication, hard work and perseverance.

Congratulations Urara!  We are all very proud of you.

Dental Assistants perform a wide range of patient care, office and laboratory duties. You could work chair-side with the dentist to make patients comfortable and prepare patients for treatment. Dental assistants might be called on to make patient files available, sterilize instruments and equipment, prepare tray set-ups for dental procedures and provide postoperative consultation.
