Practical Nursing Program Graduates Celebrate With Pinning Ceremony
Practical Nursing Program graduates celebrate with a traditional pinning ceremony. Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and desires to succeed. Workers in the field take on many roles including staff nurse, educator, nurse practitioner and nurse researcher and serve them all with a passion for the profession and a strong commitment to patient safety. They also provide care in places as diverse as emergency rooms, homeless shelters and school clinics, to name a few. National nurses week is celebrated annually from May 6th, which is recognized as National Nurses Day, through May 12th, which is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer in the field who is known as the founder of modern nursing.
On May 16th, the nursing administrative staff and faculty of Centura College at the North Chesterfield, Richmond VA campus celebrated the success of eight Practical Nursing Program graduates during a pinning ceremony. The students were pinned by Clinical Coordinator, Jennifer Cordo, RN and BSN, and Practical Nursing Instructor, Valencia Noggin, RN. Ms. Mara Still, a Licensed Practical Nurse and a September 2012 Centura College Graduate, delivered a motivational speech. Staff members and students commented that it was an honor and a privilege for Ms. Still to participate in the ceremony.
Before the program concluded, the students recited “The Nightingale Pledge,” a statement of the ethics and principles of the profession led by nursing director Eunice Scott, RN and BSN. During the pledge, Mrs. Scott held the lighted lamp that symbolizes the beacon that Florence Nightingale carried as she lead the way to care for sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean war.
