Hands-On Training for Real-World Success

As a medical assisting student at Centura College, you’ll practice the same skills you’ll use every day in hospitals, clinics, and physician’s offices.

Training covers:

  • Taking and recording vital signs
  • Assisting with patient exams and clinical procedures
  • Performing basic lab work and injections
  • Managing medical records and scheduling
  • Supporting billing, coding, and insurance processes

Additionally, you’ll prepare for industry certification with a capstone experience designed to tie together your training and give you the confidence to enter the workforce ready to make a difference.

After successfully completing our Medical Assisting degree program, graduates are eligible to pursue entry-level careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for medical assistants is projected to grow 12% between 2024-2034 with about 112,300 openings available each year across the nation.

Program Duration and Content: Your Roadmap to a Career in Healthcare

In just 15 months, our Medical Assisting program offers 60 credit hours through 17 courses that cover topics such as:
  • Anatomy and Physiology I

  • Medical Terminology

  • Principles of Pharmacology

Anatomy and Physiology I

Explore how the human body works by diving into the structures and functions that keep us moving, healing, and thriving, with a focus on key systems like the skin, muscles, bones, nerves, lymphatic network, and urinary system. By the end, you’ll have a solid foundation in anatomy and physiology that connects directly to your future work in healthcare.

Topics covered include:
  • Major body systems and how they function
  • Connections between anatomy and patient care
  • How illness and injury affect the body
  • The role of physiology in clinical decision-making

Medical Terminology

Learn to speak the language of healthcare with this course. By the end, you’ll be able to confidently understand and use medical terminology in real healthcare settings.

Topics covered include:
  • Root words, prefixes, and suffixes in medical terms
  • Common terminology for body systems and conditions
  • Accurate spelling and pronunciation
  • Applying terminology in medical documentation

Principles of Pharmacology

Learn the essentials of safely giving medications to patients of all ages. By the end, you’ll have the confidence and skills to safely and responsibly handle medications.

Topics covered include:
  • Drug classifications and their uses
  • Measurement and dosage calculation
  • Types of medication therapies
  • Safety practices for medication administration

The Medical Assisting program is offered at our campus in Chesapeake, Virginia. The campus consists of a 27,000-square-foot facility across two buildings with various amenities, including Wi-Fi, computer labs, lecture halls, and specialized labs for hands-on training. Program Requirements

Students enrolling in our Professional Esthetician program must:

  • Be at least 18 or older (must have an approved cosigner if under 18)
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Have a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
