About our HVAC Diploma

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program at Centura College provides students with the technical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry. During your HVAC diploma training at our Virginia-based school campuses, students will learn about typical HVAC systems followed by practical hands-on competencies for the three areas of HVAC: mechanical, electrical, and airflow systems. Specific areas of study include air conditioning fundamentals, electrical theory, heating systems, ice and refrigeration equipment, specialty tools, commercial water-cooled air conditioning systems, brazing and soldering techniques, and psychometry.

Objectives Include
  • Describe the basic refrigeration cycle.
  • List procedures used for bending copper tubing.
  • Discuss procedures used for soldering and brazing tubing.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems on an air-to-air heat pump.
  • Trace the circuitry in a diagram of an electric forced-air furnace.
  • Identify types of duct system installations.
  • Select the correct instruments for troubleshooting electrical problems in an air-conditioning system.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems on an air-to-air heat pump.

What HVAC Technicians Do

Individuals and businesses rely upon their HVAC systems and other refrigeration equipment in order to maintain both products and personal comfort. When a system is not operating correctly, they turn to skilled technicians to diagnose and repair the problem. On top of that, HVAC technicians are needed to install systems in new construction, whether that is an individual home or an office building. Centura’s HVAC diploma program will prepare you to perform duties associated with employer or customer needs. You’ll learn about:

  • Procedures used for bending, soldering, and brazing tubing
  • The different types of open single-phase motors used to drive fans, compressors, and pumps
  • Troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical problems in furnaces and heat pumps
  • The installation of metal ducts and duct systems
  • The five diagnostic tests of a residential energy audit
  • Health and safety issues as they relate to indoor air quality
