The Future of Energy: Benefits of Wind Turbine Technician Training

Our 12-month program introduces you to the fundamentals of generating electrical power from wind energy. You’ll learn about wind turbine safety, how to climb wind towers, and the intricacies of electrical theory. Our curriculum covers electrical circuits, electrical test equipment, alternating current and three-phase systems, circuit breakers and fuses, switching devices, and wind turbine power distribution systems. You’ll also gain hands-on experience with fasteners and torquing, bearings, lubrication, and hydraulic systems associated with wind turbines.

Climb Higher with Industry Certifications

Our program offers the opportunity to complete certifications to further advance your knowledge, while giving you a competitive edge in the job market which include:

  • Maritime-based certification(s)
  • The National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Introduction to Power Industry and Wind Turbine Maintenance Level I certification(s)
  • CPR/Basic Life Support

According to cleanpower.org, the Wind Turbine Technician profession is the second fastest growing job in the country, increasing by 44% over the next decade. Wind Turbine Technicians are in high demand and our program prepares you for entry-level employment as a Wind Turbine Technician. Once graduated, you’ll have the chance to find opportunities in the manufacturing, construction, maintenance, and operation aspects of the wind industry.

Program Duration and Content: Your Roadmap to Wind Turbine Success

In just 48 weeks, our Wind Turbine Technician program offers 36 credit hours through nine courses, including:
  • Introduction to Wind Energy and Safety

  • Wind Turbine Electricity

  • Wind Power Controls & Distribution Systems

  • Wind Fasteners and Industrial Bearings

Introduction to Wind Energy and Safety

Learn all about the world of wind power in Introduction to Wind Energy and Safety. In this course, we’ll take you on a journey through the history of wind energy and the science behind this element. You’ll get to understand how we catch wind energy through a rotor, while being introduced to the major components of a wind turbine generator. Topics covered include:
  • Wind turbine safety
  • Safe climbing guidelines
  • Equipment inspections
  • Environmental hazards
  • Power industry and energy conversion
  • Signal person techniques including crane communication

Wind Turbine Electricity

In the Wind Turbine Electricity course, learn all about advanced AC power concepts like single and three-phase alternating current. Additionally, discover the relationship between phases and how we use key components to refine AC power. Lessons covered include:
  • Transformers
  • Reactive power
  • Power factor
  • Overcurrent protection
  • Common circuit breakers and various fuses

Wind Power Controls & Distribution Systems

Learn to take control in Wind Power Controls & Distribution Systems. The curriculum in this course highlights switching devices and how they play a role in power distribution and control of wind turbines. Other subjects discussed include:
  • Mechanical and solid-state relay handling
  • Wind turbine wiring diagrams
  • Power generation basics and generators
  • Introduction of animals and individual species that inhabit the areas of offshore wind turbines
  • Wind turbine systems including control devices and power distribution

Wind Fasteners and Industrial Bearings

In Wind Fasteners and Industrial Bearings, learn all about the nuts and bolts of wind turbines. This includes wind turbine fasteners and industrial bearings. Topics of the course include:
  • Torque theory, tensioning and torquing hydraulic equipment and tools
  • Taps and dies
  • Industrial bearings such as plain, ball, guide, and take-up bearings

Program Requirements: Your Checklist for Entry into Wind Turbine Technician Training

Students enrolling in the Wind Turbine Technician program need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 or older or have an approved cosigner if under 18
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Have a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
  •  Wind Turbine Technician students are required to submit to a criminal background check. Potential students pending charges or that have been charged with a misdemeanor or felony or otherwise are ineligible for a TWIC card will not be allowed admittance into the Wind Turbine Technician program.
