At Centura College, we offer a comprehensive Construction Electrician Diploma program designed to prepare you for a career in the electrical industry. Our program, which can be completed in 12 months, includes both day and night course options to help accommodate your schedule.

Our Construction Electrician program covers a wide range of topics to sharpen your industry expertise including:

  • Electrical theory
  • Safety
  • Wiring methods
  • Blueprint reading
  • Electric equipment selection
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance of electrical equipment

With a mix of hands-on and theoretical training, Centura College’s Construction Electrician program aims to equip you with the skills needed to excel in various entry-level positions such as smart home installation, deck electrician, marine electrician, and commercial electrician. Employment exists in various roles and sectors, including electrical contracting and wiring installation work, building and construction services, manufacturing, self-employed contract work, and government services.

Program Duration and Content: Your Pathway to Becoming a Construction Electrician

In just 48 weeks, our Construction Electrician program offers 36 credit hours through nine courses, including:
  • Introduction to Construction Electrician

  • Basic Electricity

  • Electric Motor Principles

  • Life Safety Specialty Systems

Introduction to Construction Electrician

Enter an Introduction to Construction Electrician where you’ll uncover electrical theory and all things current. Understand the flow of electricity including magnetism, inductance and capacitance through hands-on experience and certification completion. Topics covered include:
  • Electrical schematics, one-lines, and wiring diagrams
  • Real-life applications using test and measuring equipment, circuitry, and electrical apparatus
  • National Electric Code (NEC)
  • OSHA 10-hour safety certification

Basic Electricity

The Basic Electricity course dives deeper into the world of electricity, understanding the National Electric Code (NEC) requirements. Among the subjects covered include:
  • Alternating currents
  • Conductors and cables
  • Conductor installations and load calculation
  • OConductors including proper wiring techniques to alternating current systems
  • Calculation of branch circuits and feeder loads
  • Conductor selection

Electric Motor Principles

In Electric Motor Principles, learn the ins and outs of electric motors. Students overview both Alternating Current (AC) motors and Direct Current (DC) motors to start the course. Among the other components discussed:
  • Motor enclosures and various motor frames, using the NEC® requirements for motors and installation
  • Major electrical components of a typical Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system
  • Proper testing equipment and troubleshooting practices
  • Motors, relays, switches, and electrical circuits experience

Life Safety Specialty Systems

In the Life Safety Specialty Systems course in the Construction Electrician program, dive into fire alarms, pools, spas, fountains, and all things life safety. This begins with learning the various types of fire alarm systems – from the basics to trouble codes. This course also covers:
  • Pools, spas, and fountains
  • Basic electronic theory and applications of semiconductors
  • Solid State Relays (SSR) and control panel components for Life Safety Systems (LSS)

Program Requirements: Your Checklist for Construction Electrician

Students enrolling in the Construction Electrician program need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 or older or have an approved cosigner if under 18
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Have a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
