Centura College offers a comprehensive Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) diploma program at its Newport News campus. This program equips students with the technical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry. The duration is 12 months, with day and night courses to help accommodate busy schedules.

Understand the Ins and Outs of Heating and Cooling: Hands-On Learning in Your Future Career

The HVAC program at Centura College is designed to provide students with practical hands-on competencies in three key areas of HVAC: mechanical, electrical, and airflow systems. The objectives of the program include:

  • Master procedures used for soldering and brazing techniques
  • Troubleshooting electrical problems on an air-to-air heat pump
  • Identifying types of duct system installations
  • Selecting the correct instruments for troubleshooting electrical problems in an air-conditioning system

Your Roadmap to a Cool Future: Career Opportunities Await

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be set to perform duties associated with employer or customer needs in the HVAC industry. Potential career paths include plumbing and HVAC contract work, wholesale trade work, state, local, and private educational services, retail trade services, and self-employed contract work. Jobs for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers are projected to grow 6% from 2022 to 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Program Duration and Content: Becoming an HVAC Technician

The HVAC diploma program covers a wide range of topics, including air conditioning fundamentals, electrical theory, heating systems, ice and refrigeration equipment, commercial water-cooled air conditioning systems, and brazing and soldering techniques. In just 48 weeks, our HVAC Technician program offers 36 credit hours through 9 courses, including:
  • Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Controls

  • Comfort and Psychometrics

  • Heat Pumps

  • Advanced Troubleshooting and Service

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Controls

Get ready to dive into the electrifying world of HVAC controls and take your knowledge to a whole new level. In this course, lay down the foundation for understanding electric and electronic components. Topics covered include:
  • Electron theory, magnetism, and Ohm’s law
  • Resistance and current flow
  • Electrical measurements
  • Power distribution controls
  • Operation and applications of safety controls

Comfort and Psychometrics

In this course, dig deep into air’s properties, characteristics, and measurements, and discover how they all come together for a comfort experience. Subjects include:
  • Control of temperature
  • Air distribution
  • Air mixtures

Heat Pumps

Dig into the realm of heat pumps. Learn all about the theory of reverse-cycle heat pumps, while exploring the components that make them tick, including four-way valves. This course covers:
  • Heat sources powering heat pumps
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
  • EPA Section 608 certification exam preparation

Advanced Troubleshooting and Service

Level up your skills with the advanced troubleshooting and service course. Become a true expert in all things mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration. This course features:
  • Proper techniques to troubleshoot systems
  • Residential air-conditioning units and commercial refrigeration
  • Mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration components
  • EPA requirements training and certification exam preparation

Students will have the opportunity to earn certifications like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour Safety Certification and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Refrigerant Transition Certification. They will also be registered with the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations in preparation for their future journeyman’s HVAC certification.

Program Requirements: Your Checklist for Entry into HVAC

Students enrolling in the HVAC program need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 or older or have an approved cosigner if under 18
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Have a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
